Lump Charcoal What is lump charcoal? The main difference between lump charcoal and formed charcoal briquettes is that lump is whole pieces of natural hardwood that has been exposed to high temperatures, which drives out volatile chemicals and leaves only the carbon. So, most of the wood “waste” is already gone before you buy it. With briquettes, that carbon is processed further. Formed charcoal is ground up, mixed with various fillers (sometimes petroleum based), and compressed into standard shapes.
